Every funeral cover brochure looks similar at first glance. The differences that matter show up in the fine print. Here’s what to check before comparing quotes from any provider.
1. Waiting Period
Ask exactly how long the waiting period is for natural death, and whether it’s waived if you’re switching from another registered insurer with continuous cover. Most insurers apply three to six months for natural causes and little to no wait for accidental death.
2. Payout Amount at Your Age
The cover amount advertised is usually the maximum available to the youngest applicants. Ask what the actual payout would be for your specific age, since it often steps down as you get older.
3. Premium Escalation
Some policies increase premiums automatically each year, others keep them flat. Ask whether your premium is guaranteed for a fixed term or can increase, and by how much, over the next five years.
4. What’s Excluded
Check for suicide exclusion periods, pre-existing condition clauses, and whether certain causes of death are excluded entirely. These exclusions differ significantly between providers.
5. How Fast Claims Get Paid
Ask directly how long a claim typically takes from submission to payout, and what documents are required. A fast payout promise is only useful if the required paperwork is realistic to gather quickly.
6. Cash-Only or Service-Linked
Decide whether you want a cash benefit paid to a beneficiary, or a plan linked directly to a funeral service provider. Each has trade-offs in flexibility versus convenience.
Get It in Writing
Whichever provider you choose, ask for the full policy schedule in writing before you pay a first premium, not just the marketing brochure. The schedule is what determines what actually gets paid out.
