Funeral Policy Payouts in South Africa: How Much Will You Actually Get?

Funeral policy payouts generally range from R10,000 to R100,000, but there’s no fixed payout across the industry, so it’s worth knowing what actually determines yours.

Typical Payout Ranges

Funeral policy payouts in South Africa generally range from R10,000 to R100,000, depending on your premium, provider, and the level of cover you chose when you signed up. Your actual amount is whatever you selected, and have been paying for, since your policy started.

What You Pay for That Payout

Premiums scale with age and cover amount. As a general guide, younger adults aged 18 to 30 often pay around R50 to R120 a month for standard cover, while people aged 31 to 50 typically pay more, often R120 to R250 a month for similar cover levels. Older applicants and higher cover amounts push premiums higher still.

The Gap Between Your Payout and the Real Cost of a Funeral

This is the part most families miss. The average funeral in South Africa costs somewhere between R15,000 and R25,000 for a basic to mid-range service, and can reach R35,000 to R45,000 once a municipal burial plot is included.

If your policy payout is on the lower end, say R10,000 to R15,000, it may not fully cover a mid-range funeral once burial, catering, and other costs are added up. That gap usually gets paid out of pocket by the family, at the worst possible time to be finding extra cash.

How to Check If Your Cover Is Enough

Work backwards from the funeral you’d actually want to give your family, not the cheapest one. Price out burial or cremation, a service, transport, and catering for visiting relatives, then compare that total to your current payout amount.

If there’s a gap, you have two straightforward options: increase your existing cover amount, or add a second, smaller policy to top up the difference. Either is usually cheaper than leaving the shortfall for your family to cover in cash after the fact.

Reviewing Your Cover

Funeral costs rise over time, so a payout that was enough five years ago may not be enough today. It’s worth reviewing your cover amount every few years, especially after any big life change.
